behind the wild

A cover look on a groundbreaking magazine calls for truly incredible hair, so when our co-founder César’s longtime client Ciara landed Essence‘s August cover, he rose to the occasion and created a 100% handmade wig that took a full 24 hours to make.

The bespoke creation started as an unbraided wig that César box braided by hand. Once the braids were in place he wrapped coiled strands of loose hair around each braid using a faux loc technique to create a completely one of a kind mane.

“It’s always a special thing when you get that phone call to be on an Essence cover.” — Ciara

As a final touch, César and his team added solid brass jewelry pieces from our upcoming line of hair jewelry to individual locs. For the shoot itself the wig was worn up, down, and—maybe our favorite—in a gravity-defying topknot.

See all the looks from Ciara’s Essence spread below.

“I’ve always believed that as an African American woman I can do anything I put my mind to, and my skin color is definitely not something that’s going to get in the way of that.” — Ciara
