HAIR CARE 101
HOW TO MAXIMIZE COLOR-TREATED HAIR
We spoke with Richy Kandasamy, co-founder and creative director of Rikoko, about how to keep your color-treated hair looking rainbow bright, super healthy, and—who knew?—pH balanced.
An expert colorist, Richy is a deep well of hair care knowledge, especially when it comes to hair that’s shapeshifted from one shade to another. Rikoko, the line he developed alongside his wife Renee Cascarina, is like a tropical vacation for your tresses: All the products are rich in plant-based ingredients like coconut, cinnamon bark, vetiver, and wild ginger.

HOW SHOULD YOU CARE FOR YOUR HAIR BEFORE YOU GET IT COLORED?
Make sure your hair is not too clean or too dirty—your natural oils will help protect your scalp, which is especially important if your scalp is sensitive. Hair that’s too dirty might interfere with the chemical reactions of the color and could impact the desired result.
ONCE IT’S COLORED, WHAT STEPS SHOULD YOU TAKE TO KEEP YOUR HAIR HEALTHY AND THE COLOR LONG-LASTING?
To achieve truly long lasting color it’s essential to have hair with a balanced pH. There are some great treatment on the market today that are professional only and should be done at the salon. I specifically developed the Rikoko Lock treatment to reset and seal hair by balancing pH, sealing the hair cuticle, and locking color in.
Then, for sure, a color protective shampoo and conditioner should always be used. After getting colored your hair and scalp are always a little sensitive, so make sure its sulphate and paraben free and as natural as possible.
ANY DIFFERENCE IN TREATMENT WHEN IT COMES TO HIGHLIGHTS VERSUS SINGLE OR DOUBLE PROCESS?
Yes, the more aggressive the color service the more it changes the state of your hair. You need a specific treatment or to help combat the damage.
DRY SHAMPOO. YES OR NO?
Dry shampoo is good, it just depends on how you use it and how much you use. I tend to lean on an everything-in-moderation and less-is-more approach.
ANY RECOMMENDATIONS ON TAKING CARE OF YOUR SCALP?
Great question. The scalp is the most important part of good hair, but it’s often not taken into consideration until you have a bad reaction or something worse. Rikoko Lock treatment not only resets your PH to lock in color but also disinfects and calms sensitive, itchy, post-color scalp.
SUMMER SEEMS LIKE A TIME WHEN COLOR-TREATED HAIR IS AT THE GREATEST RISK. THE BEACH, THE POOL, THE BRIGHT SUNLIGHT, THE LATE NIGHTS…WHAT ARE YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR KEEPING HAIR VIBRANT IN THE SUMMER MONTHS?
Your shampoo and conditioner are key; in the summer a great leave-in conditioner with UV and heat protection is essential. Moisture based products with vitamin and protein are especially great during the summer. I also like a natural base oil for split ends.
ON A RELATED NOTE, IS HOT WATER REALLY BAD FOR COLOR-TREATED HAIR?
Hot water is not bad for colored treated hair unless you have a porous or unhealthy cuticle—that can cause the color to fade faster. The heat will swell the cuticle allowing the color to escape and loose shine and reflection. Cold water will do the opposite and keep the cuticle flatter, making your color more vibrant.
WHAT ABOUT OILS AND TREATMENT MASKS?
Treatment masks are always great if they don’t have a heavy silicon base. There are a lot of great treatments available—it just depend on the needs of your hair and scalp and making sure you’re using the right oil or cream base.
YOU DESCRIBE COCONUT AS “OUR MIRACLE TREE.” WHAT MAKES IT A GREAT BEAUTY PRODUCT?
Coconut is a miracle product if you are getting top quality oil. In its purest form, coconut oil has maximum healing properties; your hair and skin will absorb it without any greasiness and heaviness. Often ingredients are harvested prematurely to keep up with consumer demands, resulting in an inferior oil that does not live up to the promised benefits and product potential.
IF SOMEONE NEEDS TO CARE FOR THEIR HAIR IN A PINCH, ARE THERE ANY KITCHEN STAPLES YOU WOULD RECOMMEND FOR CREATING A QUICK RESTORATIVE TREATMENT?
Definitely coconut oil. It will transform your hair and scalp over night.
IF YOU COULD ONLY PACK ONE PRODUCT FROM YOUR LINE ON AN AROUND-THE-WORLD TRIP, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Prism Opal Leave-In Conditioner is a multi-tasking powerhouse. It can be used as a prepping agent, protective barrier, finishing product, and refresher. It’s great on both wet and dry hair and is a major detangler and shine enhancer. It’s also lightweight enough to use daily between washes without weighing down your hair.
