NOW HEAL THIS
REIKI WITH ANDREA GAGNE
At Wildform, no healing modality is left unturned. Now Heal This is where we explore the diverse and transcendent self care practices people are diving into with the hopeful promise of internal alignment.
Subtle and innately abstract, Reiki is hard to put into words. There are no needles, fancy tools, or singing bowls; the only thing required of the recipient is to lie back and trust.
As the origin story goes, Reiki’s founder, Dr. Mikao Usui—a wealthy man who opted for an unconventional life as a Buddhist priest—received a download of ancient symbols during a 21-day fast. This transmission was the push he needed to develop a system of healing, Reiki, that would be accessible to all.
Since then, Reiki has been passed down from teacher to student around the world. We spoke with Andrea Gagne, a Reiki practitioner and friend of Wildform (and partner to the incredible Tabi Bonney), about her 10-plus years of experience in the healing modality. Unique from other practices, Reiki is, in Andrea’s estimation, a powerful transmission that uses a specific energy to heal those who seek it exactly where they need to be healed.
FOR THE UNINITIATED, WHAT IS REIKI?
Reiki is a form of energy work. Simply put, it promotes relaxation, stress relief, and healing on many levels.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Energy flows through the practitioner and into the field of the person they’re working on. This life force—energy from God, the Universe, whatever you want to call it—doesn’t come from the practitioner but is transmitted through them.
“There is a mind-body-soul connection in everything. The more you tune into it, the more aware you are of it.”
WHAT’S A TYPICAL SESSION LIKE?
Each experience is unique; you could do it multiple times and have a different session each time. But, in general, it’s a gentle and relaxing experience. Sessions are about an hour long and the client is lying down, fully clothed, in a relaxing and peaceful environment.
In my sessions, I place my hands just above or gently on you. I start at your head, then using the chakras as a guide, place my hands in different spots on your body. My hands usually get very hot and sometimes you may feel throbbing or tingling from them. I occasionally get messages for my clients or have visions that pertain to whatever they may need to hear in order to assist in their healing process. Sometimes my clients also see things or feel different sensations.
WHAT DREW YOU TO IT?
I was drawn to it after a session with a shaman back in 2007. She told me to find healing touch for myself. I never found healing touch, but I did find Reiki. I had a session with someone and decided I needed to learn it for myself.
YOU’RE ALSO A PILATES INSTRUCTOR, WHICH IS SUCH A PHYSICAL EXPRESSION, WHILE REIKI IS ALL ABOUT THE ENERGETIC FIELD. IS THERE A CONNECTION BETWEEN THEM FOR YOU?
Absolutely! Pilates requires you to be very present and aware of your body. I try to incorporate the knowledge I’ve gained through Reiki into my Pilates practice. There is a mind-body-soul connection in everything. The more you tune into it, the more aware you are of it.
AS AN ENERGY WORKER, HOW YOU DEFINE THE WORD “ENERGY?”
Good question! I see energy in colors. I also feel it in weight. In good or hopeful situations, I see light colors and the energy feels light and flowing, like a gentle summer breeze and warm sun shining on your face. In lower energy situations it can feel heavy, like being pulled down. The colors are dark colors, the sensation is cold…it’s like a situation that I want to to get out of by any means necessary. It can get very uncomfortable.
WHAT HAS REIKI UNLOCKED IN YOU? HOW HAVE YOU GROWN?
I’ve grown so much in trusting my intuition and understanding my power. Reiki has unlocked so much. It has healed me and opened up things inside me to heal more than I ever even knew was there. It has taught me that healing is a constant process. You heal what you are ready to heal, and once you heal that you go a little deeper and heal some more.
